The voice of the ancient Tillamook Forest, a verdant and peaceful ecosystem in coastal Oregon, tells of the forest life cycle, the creatures that live there, the time of the native people, the arrival of the Americans and Europeans, the work of the loggers, and the coming of the railroad. When the exploding orange blaze and deafening roar of wildfire threaten the forest, how will the terrified creatures survive? With compelling prose and art for all ages, this is a story of resilience and regeneration in the experience of a forest, one man, his cabin by the river, and the animals seeking refuge. The images are elaborate graphite drawings by author and illustrator Carrie Marie Larkin.

Sue Ann Johnson, a sixteen-year-old girl from a rural town in the Midwest, finds herself torn between the safety and familiarity of her life back home and the complications of an unpredictable new existence in the Philippines. Her family's relocation brings her near the United States Naval Base Subic Bay during the Vietnam War. Sue Ann must quickly learn to confront a world filled with uncertainty and change. Danger is ever present in the environs of Sue Ann's new home. Four Filipino girls are kidnapped from their mountain village, then forced into distressing circumstances in the city where Sue Ann now lives.
